Marcus Intalex & Doc Scott – Live @ The Samurai Music HQ 03/2009

Marcus Intalex & Doc Scott @ Samurai Music HQ

info: myspace.com/samuraimusicnz

No tracklist, just good music and a bit of chat :D

SPECIAL! Marcus Intalex and Doc Scott have been touring New Zealand a few weeks ago and at one point been stopping by at the Samurai Music Headquaters courtesy of Geoff Presha. What we have right here is a three hours worth recording of the two going deep into into the mix and chatting about music, djing etc. hosted by DJ Presha himself. Im very happy the guys picked breaksblog.biz to be the first station where you can get this insightful treat, thanks for this!

PS: I’m going to jump on the train in a few hours and will be gone for the next three weeks so this is probably my last post for the next few. If you really think you want, you can follow me on twatter twitter.

  15. bombtune, March 9, 2009 at 00:42

Excellent as Intalex can only do. His Fabric album mix is still the best though.

  28. Cun7us, March 9, 2009 at 22:42

    tracklist would be most appreciated!

  29. Lekke, March 10, 2009 at 00:34

Completing this tracklist is sure going to be one tough cookie.

Presha, now’s the time to step in and show us how it’s done ;-)

  30. drakestar, March 10, 2009 at 01:08

At min. 26:00 its Titan by Felix K forthcoming HiddenHawaii 004.
    Congratulations Felix!

  31. Presha Samurai, March 10, 2009 at 01:09

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, I was honored to be part of this. There is no tracklist, and tbh Im just enjoying the mystery that comes with all this amazing new music at once. I felt I would lose the journey if I sat there writing every tune down so I didn’t….If anyone else wants to have a go I’ll confirm the ones I know for sure but its a massive task!

  32. drumnbassguy, March 10, 2009 at 02:05

    no tracklisting no download

  33. Anon, March 10, 2009 at 02:38

Seriously I’m about to go BARMY if I hear those shitty loop effects again!!!!!!!!!!!!~$!@#$%!@#%@#$%@#$%

such amazing music and it’s wrecking it, damnit.. argh

    youre loss.
this is a great snapshot of how quality the music is these days, bigups guys, and thanks for the play :)

  35. Baseline, March 10, 2009 at 04:38

Loving this, second time through already :)

Don’t care about the tracklist tbh, makes it all the more exciting when I discover the tunes…

  36. XOXOXOXO, March 10, 2009 at 05:48

Wow… if first track is anything to go by… lurvly :)

Anyone know who did this one? It’s got kind of a commixy bass

  37. Lekke, March 10, 2009 at 10:11

@XOXOXOXO it is Commix, it’s called Break Through
@Stunna: but how, they didn’t win any dnb awards! :P

  38. glamorama:blog, March 10, 2009 at 11:25

Great stuff! What’s the name of the killer track @ 1:33 (lyrics starting with “One love…”)?

  39. backarts, March 10, 2009 at 11:29

think Anon is right, shitty loop effects does no favour to this nice mix

  40. corea, March 10, 2009 at 13:46

Golden. What’s that tune around 2h:03m?! Sounds like Calibre… what a smooth & runnin tune!!!!

  41. Element, March 10, 2009 at 14:13

    Glamorama:blog its by lynx ..

  42. strawberry, March 10, 2009 at 15:26

Refreshing to hear Doc, Marcus and Presha talking so frankly about the scene….and even better to hear it is in a good place tune wise with many more blinding tracks to come

Hopefully once club-autonomic starts up it will be the place that can showcase some of these deeper tunes

Track coming in at 10:20 mins sounds so much like early teebee it’s untrue.. love it…. could be atom?

Track at 37:40 stands out for me as well… anyone know it?

    Big thanks for sharing this

  43. fraher174, March 10, 2009 at 16:55

track around 1:51 sounds Johnny L’ish, love it! super stripped down,

  44. fraher174, March 10, 2009 at 17:37

reckon they hit the djm roll so much to prevent kids coggin’ the tracks?
probably a necessary evil these days,

  45. Element, March 10, 2009 at 17:51

SECOND TRACK IN FROM THE START FUCKING TUNE…

HAS A COMMIX SOUND TO IT.

  46. CG, March 10, 2009 at 18:30

    Excellent show, thanks Presha!

This is bittersweet really… quality tunes no doubt but with as they put it “gigabytes of quality music” now surfacing the likelihood of these seeing the light of day is ????

Here’s my suggestion: Marcus + Doc start a digital label to release these bits to the public please, here’s even a suggested name:

    SOUL:31

    :-)

  47. Remedy, March 10, 2009 at 21:44

    “drumnbassguy, March 10, 2009 at 02:05

    no tracklisting no download”

That’s by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on here.

Big ups Presha, this looks fooking ace :)

  48. CG, March 10, 2009 at 21:58

2:02:30 Calibre – Let Me Hold You

    Siick!

  49. Pruven Music, March 11, 2009 at 00:16

My favs, great tunes. Thanks so much.

Any time these 3 guys get together and put out a 3hr mix I’m on it…you’d be an idiot not to…minus a track list makes it a bit of fun in a twisted way….

  50. XOXOXOXO, March 11, 2009 at 04:00

@Lekke – thanks for the tune ID!

  51. brickedy brack, March 11, 2009 at 10:39

haha, reckon these cobbers just got fucked up and mixed all afternoon?

  52. rollo, March 11, 2009 at 12:57

    Thanks again :)

I enjoyed this but at the same time I feel all this techy & moody sounding dnb is a bit to much. I like a bit of variation and there is a shortage of good soulful & musical dnb (by musical i mean with real instruments and not synth sounding). The only person I can really count on for warm vibes is Random Movement or Lenzman. Also off the topic…Calibre’s music has taken a completely different direction and I am no longer feeling it like I was prior to 2007.

The Intalex Scotty rant was enlightening. They had some honest stuff to say and it’s nice to know that they still have a lot of love for DnB. There is an upside and a downside to keeping what they play/release underground. In my opinion they should put more effort into reaching out to the common man (as DnB needs more exposure), but I really don’t think that is on their agenda.

Also I feel DNB was 10x more exciting when there was no internet; only tape packs, your local record stores weekly shipment and the UK touring dj that passed through town with a bag of dubs!! I think we are a little spoilt and I personally have taken a step back from listening to these label podcasts, radio mixes, studio mixes etc. It is spoiling the whole record buying experience
for myself and possibly the livelihood of the music. No wonder record sales are down and 320s of most tunes are available b4 release date. Labels / Producers are shooting themselves in the foot without proper promotion through the correct channels. My 5c worth ;)

  53. Klay Pigeon, March 11, 2009 at 15:30

Biggup to all involved! some of these tunes are incredible.

I’m based in London, and my feeling is we need a place in the city to hear this music week in week out!

There are odd nights happening every so often, but if these guys are saying there’s so much of this music around, then we need to have our own place where we can gather and listen to it!!

I know Marcus has his thing at fabric sometimes, and swerve is re opening this week, but neither of those seem entirely appropriate as a platform to share these sounds.

Does anyone echo these sentiments? Now the end has closed its time for a new venue/night to take drum and bass forward!

  54. b-pro, March 11, 2009 at 15:42

    @ Klay Pigeon

I hear you man! I’m currently a student in Southampton and I would love to plan a regular night down here, I got big inspiration for Ben Payne and the whole Intrigue thing, and wanna push things as there are dnb nights about town but not the kind of thing I necessarily like. A kinda Soul:R vs. 31 would be awesome anywhere and would promote this sound even though gathering from here its not to everyone’s taste, which is fair enough.

p.s. love the rant in this, looking forward to the next big show!

  55. Raw Q, March 11, 2009 at 18:16

inspiring music + inspiring words from the 2 most innovative dons in the scene imo!

  56. woozie, March 11, 2009 at 18:41

    @klay pigeon

i second that emotion!! there’s definitely a gap in the market right now in the smoke hey

wicked set, fankin you guvnas :)

  57. DjPi, March 11, 2009 at 18:42

I tend to agree with Rollo, though I appreciate the ability to D/L quality mixes to pass the sheer mundanity of existence, when one can listen to anything, anywhere at any time it tends to devalue the material….

  58. Tron, March 12, 2009 at 01:19

Rollo and Klay Pigeon sholud get together… like hart to hart… talking a lot of sense.

Having said that i haven’t listened to this mix yet, on the d/l.

  59. AMPLIFIER, March 12, 2009 at 03:47

a whole lotta love coming from me – thanks

  60. Presha Samurai, March 12, 2009 at 04:59

    Rollo said…

“I have a dnb rulebook and these guys arent complying…” or something like that

Come on mate, each person does the best they can with the time and resources they have available. Its a bunch of free music from some guys having a fun afternoon mixing in the sun, and chatting honestly…. does it really have to have all these drastic implications and consequences for the worldwide scene? Its there to enjoy. You do what you like with your career and music, let others do what they feel is right with theirs.

  61. rollo, March 12, 2009 at 09:48

“I have a dnb rulebook and these guys arent complying…” or something like that

I saw the rule book on rapidshare and Rider apparently broke them ;)

does it really have to have all these drastic implications and consequences for the worldwide scene?

I just stated that the sheer massive amount of online dnb mixes is ridiculous. I have always been a fan of Soul:r/Solution radio and the Doc Scott ethos on dnb.

We are all entitled to our own opinions and I am not scared to voice mine. Though I couldn’t agree more that music is there for enjoyment :)

    Peace.

ps. I am looking forward to Luca’s “speak easy” to come out on Red Seal. When is it due out on wax?

  62. Presha Samurai, March 12, 2009 at 11:13

Calibre & MC DRS and more true talk live next week on Samurai Music Radio

  63. Klay Pigeon, March 12, 2009 at 12:16

Good to hear people out there feel the same.

Marcus talks in the show about how the shear amount of this music and how scares him, and i can understand how he must feel.

A place for us to meet and listen to it would be a way for us to organise it in some way, create a vibe in a venue that can begin to understand what’s happening with the music right now.

I don’t have the experience or resources to make this happen, but if anyone else is reading this and can they should GO FOR IT! Now is the time!!

Listen to it on my ipod is one thing, but i wanna be amoungst the ravers shaking to this music week in week out…

  64. The Illusionist, March 12, 2009 at 16:18

Fantastic music and true words spoken from the hearts of two jungle dons……Highly Recomended

  65. paul, March 12, 2009 at 16:21

yes, i get the point, there’s this huge ammount of music around right now and it’s hard, if not impossible to keep up with all this. everyone with a computer and ab bit of spare time can release whatever they want. and possibly a fraction of it is actually good.

but hey, isn’t this just democratic? what’s the point of having a self installed elite, exclusively entitled to have their say, musically? what’s wrong with everyone choosing for themselves and adding, if they think there’s something missing or if they just feel like it?
especially if as a result some nobodies are releasing the sickest stuff i could have never imagined.

thanks, marcus, d-bridge and all the others for selecting some of the good stuff, putting your name on it, mixinbg it with the big ones and thus making me listen to it.
nobody is getting hurt and dnb is more alive than ever!

loving the upbeats tune, by the way.
and the recent calibre stuff makes me weep on a regular basis (in a positive way)

    buzz killington

  71. Element, March 14, 2009 at 03:59

    Rollo

Mate get over it, its music it has to change and drum and bass has had much change in the passed few years and more.

it will always do different things and move in different directions. You think you can control it. Be happy that it hasn’t died like some dance music.

people like you piss me off “when there was no internet”. well you wouldn’t have the access you have now to contradict most probably every set/radio show you hear.

if you have problems with it fuck off and listen to something else.

    that is my opinion.

thanks for the honesty in what you said.

  72. Trojan, March 14, 2009 at 20:16

    I think Rollo is right.
As a music community we are extremely spoilt, i also believe because we are so spoilt the scene is getting a bit lazy.
There are too many producers doing the same kinds of thing these days, maybe thats because is so easy to hear new music, the next new sound is immediately taken and used to death, or maybe it’s coincidence.

P.s I don’t like this new drum and bass sound that muhc either, i think it’s pandering to a dubstep audience.

  73. kraal, March 15, 2009 at 18:24

I fucking hate dubstep, its is the dullest shittest music imaginable, and why so many d&b artists are making these crap dubstep style tunes is beyond me.. maybe they are getting bored of making the same stuff over and over.. I dunno.. either way dubstep is a big pile of boring toss

  74. Rents, March 15, 2009 at 20:14

why does music have to be big on a dance floor to be considered good music?

  75. drumnbassguy, March 15, 2009 at 21:41

do not post the tracklisting of any set is the more lamer fucking thing in the drum and bass scene

  76. docscott31, March 16, 2009 at 03:22

thanks for all the positive comments (mostly)

real drum n bass is alive and well, keep the faith, fuck the mainstream

re: tracklisting, that wasnt really the point, it was just about having a good afternoon and playing a few tunes to show thats there some good music out there, thats it, if you dont like it, go and buy a compilation album, they have tracklistings …

all the tracks wll surface somewhere at some time, hopefully mostly on soul:r and 31, im gonna get off my ass this year and release some stuff, we are also both considering starting a digital arm of our labels to get more stuff out there, so you have more of a choice than the piles of chedder thats out there ;)

    ez

    scotty

  77. Anonymous, March 16, 2009 at 13:30

    Well said Scotty

digital label sounds a good idea too

  78. pipe, March 16, 2009 at 18:22

doc, nice one. safe to say most of us “got it” and are all about the sounds as well. for me that’s what has always tied this scene together nicely: common interest in pressibg bounderies.

    keep this ish coming!

  79. minstyle, March 16, 2009 at 19:43

    like it!

  80. Eric B, March 16, 2009 at 21:21

  82. anaphor, March 17, 2009 at 07:46

    I’m no slave…

Thanks for posting this and keeping it real guys. It’s greatly appreciated and I believe that this is the sort of thing that is what it is really all about. Good music is good, no matter who has made it or what you want to call it.

  83. JaZzy, March 17, 2009 at 10:20

    three great hours… :-)

    thanks

  84. Chiral Anomaly, March 17, 2009 at 15:55

Some seriously seriously good good good music. Absolutely love the discussions too.
I do hope that some day a drum & bass night that can parallel the days at the Blue Note will arise. Something that’s off the beaten track to the masses and brings in the crowds that love this innovative, fresh and distinctive sound.
I hope this side of the music continues to give a middle finger to the mainstream.

  86. Trojan, March 18, 2009 at 19:42

I think there still are nights like Blue Note, sure they may not have such a massive influence on the scene both musically and socially but they are there.
For instance Sub Dub @ The West Indian Centre in Leeds is probably the best night i have ever been too. Irration Steppas soundsystem in what is essentially a gym and then a small DnB room at the side where pretty much anything goes.

    Good

    Presha, DocScott, Marcus:
Thank you for making, and subsequently posting this set. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am taking it for exactly what it is – a wicked afternoon in the sun mixing and enjoying tunes. You deserve props for sharing the moment with the rest of us. For that, I am grateful, to all 3 of you!
Side note: I have been through the ebbs and flows of the dnb scene since the mid-90′s, and perhaps it is the constant evolution that keeps me coming back (not that I ever left). I am so optimistic about what 2009 will bring. Haven’t felt this way since Marcus Intalex did a wicked mix in 2004 for drum and bass arena.
    Best to you all.

A little off topic…but I personally would prefer more vinyl releases (as I haven’t yet gone down the software mixing route) but I assume this is making less and less financial sense for the labels.

How about throwing in the mp3 free or for a reduced price if you purchase the vinyl?! Better value for vinyl customers who are paying the higher prices for tunes, and saves the hassle of digitising it later…and could squeeze a few more vinyl sales out of people who are in limbo about vinyl/digital….. or maybe i’ve had too many beers this weekend :-)
