Yep, Gilles finally got around to a Brownswood Basement Special that he’s been promising since about 2003! He spent a whole day rummaging through stacks of 12′s, white labels and old acetates and pulled out about 40 old favourites. Photek, Peshay, Goldie, DJ Hype, Source Direct, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, Ed Rush & Optical… 110% underground heaters, classic material and golden memories, it’s by no means a comprehensive history of D&B, but it is a great snapshot of a scene in full flow.
I am quite late on this one but this is one you should not miss. Gilles Peterson providing a two hours history lesson with loads of classic tuneage from the golden years of drum and bass. New producers please take notes.

Another rare blast from the past. Dr. S. Gachet recorded at Gravity in Perth, Australia in 1997 with an deep and slightly unusual selection from the days when the bright and dark sounds still went together so nicely.
Many thanks to Devo who recorded these sets from cassette tape by request for Mr. Rollo.

Chris @ Metalheadz posted this set over at DOA wondering where drum and bass has gone wrong. In said thread there are some good points on the changes that happened to the music. Too much focus on getting the loudest pressing, most tearing midrange and a miseducated crowd that will only respond to obvious rave signals are the main issues in my opinion. Old story and there is surely enough talented people and dope beats out there so please go buy the music and enjoy this nice little set straight from the Blue Note Club, London back in 1997.
Oh and Chris also dopped this info:
This is one of many…I got 10 + sets so far out of the 500 from blue note, hanover grand, dingwalls, heaven etc…
… looks like there is loads more to come!
